"Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist."

--- Alan Lakein

I often, so often, talk about making the practice your own. Tuning into your body, your mind, your emotions and allowing them to not only integrate but to also dictate how you practice. Tuning in so you can intelligently respond to postures in ways by which you will benefit the most is a grand benefit of returning to the mat again and again. We begin to connect to the practice in our own personal intuitive intelligence and we gain trust in ourselves to do so. The rules of the practice such as alignment is where we begin to foster relationship between body and mind. We increase body awareness, focus and connection to self. By arranging the body in its anatomically correct positions helps the flow of energy so that we can create more efficient movements, but alignment isn't always a one size fits all. In fact, more often it isn't. As varied and as unique our stories are, so are our bodies, our vulnerabilities and our strengths. We show up to the mat and grow not only in humility and acceptance but in appreciation, compassion and awe. We begin to change patterning in our bodies in our own way and time, so that we can increase in strength, mobility and flexibility. We enhance our ability to be mindful, to create and move energy through our bodies, finding better circulation and balance. We become artists.
