Stillness and I’m so Restless
Restlessness is a malady of our time. Technology transfers information far faster than real life. We are increasing our distance from nature and from physical movement. We are inundated with options of things to choose from in so many areas of life. We also have multiple distractions constantly pulling for our attention, eroding our focus and keeping us from concentrating on the task at hand. We live in a time where we are bombarded with constant stimulation that in fact, when we have a moment without it, we feel disconnected and choose stimulation over stillness, forgoing peace and severely compromising our nervous systems which pretty much controls our entire body systems.
We show up for yoga and in a moment of stillness our minds and hearts race. "What is up?? I'm trying here. I just need to relax. Why can't I relax? Why am I here? I have a grocery list to add to and one more errand to make sure happens tomorrow and I really need to write it down less I forget. Where did I put my phone?"
All of it is soooooooo ok. Human in 2022. As long as we have breathe, we are a work in progress. We are also a product of our time. Practicing patience and compassion for yourself is a very good place to begin a gentle lean into being still. Peace will come. Our bodies and minds house innate intelligence, knowing what to do for healing and restoring equilibrium when we create a conducive environment for it.
