I’ve always enjoyed movement. Turns out we’re all hardwired for it!
I’ve loved movement, and gyms and workout studios for a long time. When we do stuff we love, we don't analyze why. Until we do. :) What it is exactly about moving the body that makes us feel so good? Or perhaps, what is it about the body that when we don't move, we also don’t feel so good??
Turns out it's not just endorphins or other good for us chemicals that flood our bloodstream from moving the body. Although, yes, that's part of it. So is joint hydration, muscular engagement and freeing up energy in body, mind spirit. Buuuuuuuut, that “feel good” also has a lot to do with community! We were wired for connection, quite literally. From the beginning of man's time on this blue ball, those who thrived were the ones who not only hunted and gathered (which was a lot of exercise and patience, I might add), but who also shared their good fortune with each other! They were the ones who'd formed community and this community took care of eachother. There's actually the same great chemical drop our bodies get when we are part of a "getting after it" community. We add our own energy into the whole and everyone feels good. This is what happens in yoga class! We are not only benefiting from our own individual practice, but also and in a big way, to the corporate practice. When I learned this recently, it made so much sense as to why lockdown was additionally hard for me. It wasn't that I wasn't moving, it was that I wasn't moving in community. Gosh, it feels pretty great to move together again. Tribe on! Bring a friend, share the goodness!
